Checking in with Baldocaster

Interview by: Eric Riedel

For those that don’t know Baldocaster has become one of the more interesting and dynamic electronic producers out there. With each release starting with his debut album “Moonrise” in late 2018 he has continued to develop his unique sound. It would be easy to lump him into one wave or another and that would be a disservice. He has quickly developed his own sound, a master of hardware synths that is able to explore different sonic soundscapes and moods. Essentially fulfilling the promise of what synthesizers can do. He’s alway busy usually working on one E.P. and album at once. TPA’s Eric drops by Baldcasters’s DM’s and gets caught up on.

TPA- Hey there David. It's been awhile since the world has had an update on your projects. Can you tell us what you've been working in? Anything spicy you can talk about?

BC- Hey! Yeah I'm just wrapping up a new album. In the final stages of getting mastering and artwork etc. Im really excited to get this one out there. Feels like I am finally getting the balance of vibes that i’ve been experimenting with to come together. In addition to that i’ve got a collab album thays pretty far along with a friend and also another collab EP or album that's slowly being worked on. Many things.

TPA- So, what you're saying is you've been busy lol. If you were to give album 4 vibe a name what would it be? Any particular theme you are exploring? as I know you always have something in mind. I know what the "collab " is there any time frame for it and what we can expect? You have some vinyl things in the works are you able to talk about it yet? Album 4 Vinyl? Also how are you?

BC- I'm good man, just coastin’ along as the world falls apart lol. The vibe of the new album is all about dreams. Last year I had 2 instances of sleep paralysis about a week apart. Transitioning smoothly from dream to being awake but hallucinating and hearing things, not being able to move (and apparently I was screaming.) Pretty shortly after that I saw the film Come True that Pilotpriest made, which deals with a lot of the same stuff and links it to Jungian ideas about dreams and the self. So it's all about diving (both literally and metaphorically) into your dreams to find their meaning and confronting the different parts of yourself. So whatever you'd name all that haha.

BC- On the larger collab I'd say it's about 70% done. Needs a few more tracks. If we are trying for vinyl that will probably push into next year for release. And yes I've got some previous releases lined up for vinyl. Should be out this year! I definitely am going to get the new album pressed but I'd prefer to release it digitally and have the vinyl come when it's ready, with the way pressing has gotten these days. It really sucks if you want to release with the vinyl on hand. By the time you get it the songs on the record can be stuff you wrote 2 years ago.

BC- I tend to have a harder time starting the next thing when I've got an unreleased album hanging around.

TPA- Holy moly, you didn't tell me this?!?!?! I had sleep terrors when I was a kid and a very similar feeling. But as I child I didn't understand what was happening which made it way worse. Come True was great for exploring those ideas. Excited to see what he comes up with next. From the looks of his IG posts its gonna be dark lol

TPA- That's exciting news. I know people are gonna be pumped for it when it comes out. At this point in your "Baldocaster " career do fan expectations ever loom in your mind?

TPA- That's a good thing I'd say. Does that nagging feeling feeling help drive getting the music out there?

BC- Definitely, I kinda want to clear the plate before putting anything else on. Strangely I've gotten so impatient with my past 2 albums that each time I've actually written an E.P. after I wrote the albums and then released it myself before the albums came out.

BC- Not really haha. I mean, it means the world to me that people listen and enjoy and send me messages and reach out about my music. It still surprises me each time honestly. But I make the music for myself and I make what I want to make each time. I feel like whatever small amount of interest I've gotten and approval from artists I look up to is enough for me to validate it. So I don't feel bad about it. That was a bit of a struggle early on but I had to just stop caring haha.

BC- Ah that sounds terrifying to have as a child man! It didn't really scare me much after the fact just so much as feel like such a weird and surreal experience that stuck in my mind. Yeah I'm very excited for any films or music he puts out. One of the absolute best artists out there, period.

TPA- That has to be freeing. Being able to not care and focus on what interests and excites you?

BC- It is, though I am less productive than early on when I put a lot of pressure on myself. But I enjoy it much more and am more pleased with the results.

TPA- Are there more ideas and themes you're going to explore musically? You've been so productive already, I'm curious of you're building up or slowing down creatively

TPA- Just answered my question lol

TPA- What more is there for Baldocaster? Or is it a vehicle for you to explore your inner world through music that never ends?

BC- Haha I'm always speeding up and slowing down but I seem to always have about an album and an E.P. a year or so.

BC- As long as I'm interested and excited about making something new that's not exactly what I've done before I'll keep on 'splorin.

TPA- Nice, well thanks mang for catching up with me. Surely exciting things are coming down the way from you. 😘🙏

BC- Yeah boyeee thanks for taking the interest ☺️
